Takeover of U.S. Wind Energy Giant

Interesting article, mentioning Sun Power Corp. (NASDAQ:SPWR), about the wind farm giant Horizon Wind Energy buyout by Portuguese utility EDP.

Two days ago they opened in Serpa, Portugal an 11 Megawatt photovoltaic power plant, one of the world's largest to date.

If the deal goes through, it will make the Portuguese utility one of the largest renewable energy companies in the United States - as well the world - and the acquisition is another sign that European companies are increasingly looking at the U.S. as rich market for green tech. Horizon operates wind farms in 15 states that generate more than 1,500 megawatts, and the Houston-based company has another 9,000 megawatts in the pipeline, according to EDP.

Metallurgical-grade silicon - polysilicon substitute?

The persistent shortage of polysilicon is now prompting solar cell makers to seek substitutes such as metallurgical-grade silicon as alternative raw material. This trend is growing obvious and industry players are aware of the potential development as this may pose structural changes to the industry.

Polysilicon supply will remain tight until 2008, according to research by JP Morgan in a September 2006 research report. The equity firm attributed the cautious expansion to the vast investment involved and the experience of vicious oversupply in 1998. JP Morgan further noted that most polysilicon vendors require stringent long term contracts with favorable pricing agreements before they start building new capacity under the mentioned considerations.

SWH500 solar project

Project to address energy crisis launched today

A project aimed at addressing the energy crisis in the country was launched in Tshwane today. The SWH500 project will see 500 solar heating units installed over the next six months.

The project is a collaboration between the department of science and technology, the Central Energy Fund, and the United Nations Development Programme.

At least 60% of the average household's electricity bill is made up of energy used to power a geyser, this cost can be completely cut out with the use of solar heating units.

Solar power closer to reality
Project SWH500, which will see 500 units installed in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape hopes to bring solar power closer to being an everyday reality.

One of the main stumbling blocks to the objective is start-up costs. The department has offered to subsidise the first 500 units by between R5 000 and R6 000.

However at an average cost of between R15 000 and R20 000 it remains unaffordable for most South Africans. Mosibudi Mangena, the science and technology minister, said the second phase of the project will address this issue. "The second phase will enable the commercial installation of a further 9 000 solar water heaters over a period of five years, with the ultimate goal of further bridging affordability gaps and making the benefits of solar water heaters available to low-income households."
