As SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ:SPWR) continues to trek higher, today's option traders are upping the bullish ante from last Friday's optimists. Of the 2,436 contracts traded at SPWR's May 20 call, more than half have crossed at the ask price, implied volatility has surged 29.1 percentage points, and volume is outstripping open interest. In summation, it appears that new positions are being initiated here today. ...traders expect SPWR to move north of the round-number $20 mark by Friday's close -- when front-month options expire. More specifically, the traders will begin to profit with each step above $21.08 (strike plus the volume-weighted average price of $1.08) the stock takes through week's end.Source

Solar power company SunPower Corp (SPWRA.O) said on Monday it had signed a contract with electronics maker Jabil Circuit Inc (JBL.N) to build solar panels in Mexico beginning in the second half of 2009.
...
SunPower currently produces its solar panels in the Philippines and has a partnership with SunEnergy in China. It is also looking at establishing manufacturing in large solar markets in the United States, the company said.

Today, the Solar Energy Industries Association reported that solar capacity grew by 17% in 2008, which is good (but old) news. The president of the group also said that solar wasn't immune to the downturn--which is also old news. Solar companies have been turning in crappy quarters left and right lately.
It doesn't seem to matter today. First Solar (FSLR) is up $5 at this point, Solar ETF TAN is up 7% and SunPower (SPWRA) and JA Solar (JASO) are both up 10%.
The pop could be driven by a rumor we heard on Fast Money last night that First Solar might be added to the S&P 500.

SunPower reported Thursday a five-fold jump in net income in the fourth quarter and a huge surge in revenue, and it expects revenue and profits to grow in 2009.

The mood though, is far from euphoric as analysts and company executives are still worried about the fragile state of the economy. SunPower, in fact, announced it laid off about 6 percent of its non-manufacturing employees, or 1.2 percent of its overall global workforce.
The San Jose, Calif.-based solar panel maker brought in $29.55 million, or 35 cents per share in the fourth quarter, compared with $4.88 million, or 6 cents per share, from the year-ago period. A strong U.S. dollar against the Korean won resulted in a 7 cent per share gain, the company said.

SAN FRANCISCO -(Dow Jones)- An official at the California Public Utilities Commission proposed Tuesday that regulators approve a power purchase agreement between a unit of PG&E Corp. (PCG) and solar-panel maker SunPower Corp. (SPWRA).
The contract is for 550 gigawatt-hours a year for 25 years from a 210-megawatt solar-power plant that SunPower has proposed building in San Luis Obispo County, Calif., about 100 miles northwest of Los Angeles. The project will use solar panels made with monocrystalline silicon cells that will be mounted on tilted single-axis tracking systems, according to a proposed decision by CPUC Executive Director Paul Clanon.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Solar power company SunPower Corp (SPWR.O: Quote, Profile, Research) will meet its financial forecasts this year and in 2009, even if the U.S. government fails to renew tax incentives that expire at the end of the year, Chief Executive Officer Tom Werner said on Tuesday.
The U.S. Congress has yet to pass an extension of the Investment Tax Credit (ITC) for solar installations or similar incentives that reduce the costs of wind, biomass and other renewables that would be acceptable to the White House.
"We control our own destiny, (and) we'll be able to enter other new markets rapidly, and we believe we can hold our guidance for '08 and '09, even if the ITC doesn't pass, by moving business elsewhere," Werner told the Reuters Global Energy Summit.
Is serious competition coming to solar panel darlings First Solar (FSLR) and SunPower (SPWR)? The two’s shares traded down today after a note from Friedman, Billings, Ramsey analyst Mehdi Hosseini stated that a customer of equipment maker Applied Materials (AMAT) was able to build a panel factory in three months’ time using Applied’s tools, according to the Associated Press, signalling that Applied could boost supply in the market, which could conceivably spell sharper competition for First Solar and SunPower.
“Applied’s customers are attempting to make a similar thin film solution to First Solar’s that is applicable to the same end market,” he noted, “But First Solar is producing higher efficiencies than Applied on an R&D basis.”
